The song "Hallelujah", with its poignant and evocative melody, has had a resurgence since it was released by its writer Leonard Cohen in the 1980s. Many artists have covered the song with over 300 known versions in existence. The version most casual listeners probably recognize is that preformed by Rufus Wainwright as heard in the movie Shrek. Kelly Clarkson preformed the song on the ill-fated show "Duets" and recently Jon Bon Jovi's 2007 cover has been making the rounds on social media.
Despite this, many churched folks have been fooled into thinking that, since it uses the word Hallelujah repeatedly, the song must be "Christian", though if you really pay attention to the lyrics of the original you will find it is actually blasphemous.
HERE is a pretty good article about the matter.
Now, if you want to hear a rendition: a) whose lyrics do the melody justice, b) whose singer and musicians are truly gifted, c) that will bless your heart, d) that actually glorifies God Almighty, here you go...
The group preforming this version, called "A Hallelujah Christmas" is Cloverton, a Christian band that come on the music scene in 2011. Until I recently happened upon this video I had never even heard of them, but then again I don't purchase much music and listen to very little on the radio; usually my exposure to new songs comes from my adolescent sons and their friends; in this case Olivia, my oldest son''s "friend" was the provider. If you would like to know more about the band you can check out their About page.
So... I just wanted to share a lovely and worshipful rendition of an exquisite tune as Christmastide begins.
